Frequently Asked Questions

Following are some answers to the questions we hear most often:

1. What if my child is sick?
Please do not bring a sick child to class.

2. What if my child cries?

Our teachers understand the nature of a child’s fear. The instructor will work to gain the trust of the child by acknowledging the child’s fear and giving him/her the tools to overcome the fear. Often, a simple reassurance makes all the difference.  Sometimes it takes a class or two for young children to become acclimated.

3. Do you offer make-up classes or credit for missed classes?

Due to time constraints, we cannot offer refunds, credits, or make-ups for missed classes. If your child is unable to attend, we will see your child at the next scheduled lesson. Consistency is one of the keys to our program. We ask that you do your best to regularly bring your child to swim lessons.

If we cancel a class for reasons which are within our control, we will either apply a credit to your account or if possible schedule a make up day during the next session.

4. What will my child need to bring to swim class?

If your child has long hair, we ask that you tie it back in a ponytail or have him/her wear a swim cap, so that it does not interfere with swimming. For your convenience, we have both goggles and caps available for purchase in the Pro Shop. All children under the age of three must wear a fitted, disposable swim diaper while swimming.  Plastic training pants or regular diapers are NOT permitted.

5. At what age should my child begin swim lessons?

The earlier the better. We offer Mom and Tot classes for ages 9 mos - 3 yrs.  Once a child has turned 3, they can be enrolled in a regular class. We find that children who begin swim classes before they reach one year of age generally accept the water more readily than older children. Fear of the water is acquired over time. The older a child is when first beginning a learn-to-swim program, the more challenging his or her fear will likely be to overcome. Remember, learning to swim is a life-saving skill. The best day to start lessons was yesterday!

6. Group vs. Private Lessons: Which is better for my child?

Group classes are small, and individualized.  However, some children respond better to one on one attention, and may require private lessons.  Also, if your child is older, and does not swim, or is behind others in his/her age group, it is best to start with a few private lessons to bring them "up to speed" before enrolling in group lessons.  Please email Coach Carol for advice or with any questions.  Coachcarol@grotoncountryclub.com.

7. What if my child has a medical condition?

If you believe that your child has any form of medical condition which might reasonably affect his or her participation in swim lessons, please advise the office staff during the registration process.

8. What is your refund policy for Group and/or Private lessons?

Group lessons - to receive a full refund, cancellations must be made not later than 14 days prior to the commencement of classes. However, we realize this isnt't always possible if your child is sick or injured the weekend before class begins or during class. If this is the case, simply provide a doctors note and we will make every effort to either reschedule your child to a later session or refund registration.

Private lesson - If your child is sick your appointment may be rescheduled but cannot be refunded.

9. What happens if it rains or there is a thunder and lightening storm?

In case of light rain or drizzle, classes will be held. In the case of heavy rain, classes will be cancelled.  Thunder and lightening - class will not be held and due to time constraints will not be made up. There must be a 45 minute waiting period after the last boom of thunder (for example if the 9am class was cancelled it is likely the 9:45 class will be also, but not the 10:30 class).
